Vertex Guarding in Weak Visibility Polygons

چکیده
The art gallery problem enquires about the least number of guards that are sufficient to ensure that an art gallery, represented by a polygon P , is fully guarded. In 1998, the problems of finding the minimum number of point guards, vertex guards, and edge guards required to guard P were shown to be APX-hard by Eidenbenz, Widmayer and Stamm. In 1987, Ghosh presented approximation algorithms for vertex guards and edge guards that achieved a ratio ofO(log n), which was improved toO(log logOPT ) by King and Kirkpatrick in 2011. Ghosh also conjectured that constant-factor approximation algorithms exist for these problems. We settle the conjecture for the special class of polygons that are weakly visible from an edge and contain no holes by presenting a 6-approximation algorithm for finding the minimum number of vertex guards that runs in O(n) time. Contrastingly, for weak visibility polygons with holes, we present a reduction from Set Cover to show that there cannot exist a polynomial time algorithm for the vertex guard problem with an approximation ratio better than 1− 12 lnn for any > 0, unless NP = P .

Fast Vertex Guarding for Polygons
For a polygon P with n vertices, the vertex guarding problem asks for the minimum subset G of P ’s vertices such that every point in P is seen by at least one point in G. This problem is NP-complete and APX-hard. The first approximation algorithm (Ghosh, 1987) involves decomposing P into O ( n ) cells that are equivalence classes for visibility from the vertices of P . This discretized problem ...
متن کاملA PTAS for vertex guarding weakly-visible polygons - An extended abstract
In this extended abstract, we first present a PTAS for guarding the vertices of a weakly-visible polygon P from a subset of its vertices, or in other words, a PTAS for computing a minimum dominating set of the visibility graph of the vertices of P . We then show how to obtain a PTAS for vertex guarding the entire polygon. Digital Object Identifier 10.4230/LIPIcs...

متن کاملDynamic algorithms for visibility polygons
We devise dynamic algorithms for the following (weak) visibility polygon computation problems: • Maintaining visibility polygon of a fixed point located interior to simple polygon amid vertex insertions and deletions to simple polygon. • Answering visibility polygon query corresponding to any point located exterior to simple polygon amid vertex insertions and deletions to simple polygon. • Main...
متن کاملAlmost Tight Bounds for Conflict-Free Chromatic Guarding of Orthogonal Galleries
We address recently proposed chromatic versions of the classic Art Gallery Problem. Assume a simple polygon P is guarded by a finite set of point guards and each guard is assigned one of t colors. Such a chromatic guarding is said to be conflict-free if each point p ∈ P sees at least one guard with a unique color among all guards visible from p. The goal is to establish bounds on the function χ...
